EGYPTOMANIA: EGYPTIAN STYLE BRITISH CINEMAS, IN THE USA AND FRANCE - by Richard Gray

The Gallery at Alan Baxter Associates, London, EC1M 6EL
Fri 9th January 2026 6:30PM

The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt in 1922 enormously promoted the idea of using the style of ancient Egyptian temples in cinema architecture, and there were notable British examples in the form of the Carlton cinemas in Upton Park and Islington in London.

But the origins of ‘Egyptianising’ extended back a hundred years before, in the wake of Napoleon's military campaigns on the Nile, and even earlier when artefacts from ancient Egypt became highly valued objects in Renaissance Italy. Regency Britain had three full-scale architectural forays into the mode: one in Penzance and the other in Devonport, and most notably the long-lost Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly, home briefly to the pioneering films in the 1890s.

These early examples will be covered together with examples from the heyday of cinema construction in this country, in the USA and elsewhere.

Our presenter: Richard Gray is Chair of Casework for the Cinema Theatre Association, author of cinema books related to their history, design and architecture and of a forthcoming book: The Cinema Palace: Lost and Found.
